How the lion is made
The lion dance costume seems fascinating because of its personality such as fluffy fur,colourful eyes and unique designs.But how is the lion dance costume made?
In Malaysia,we have the Wan Seng Hang Dragon and Lion art store which makes lion dance costumes.The store is located in an industrial area in Shah Alam.The store produces around 500 lion dance costumes a year and also exports them around the world.
In Wan Seng Hang, we have the lion dance head enthusiast Master Siow Ho Phiew who is currently running the store alongside his daughter Hooi Boon and other workers as well.Master Siow has been making lion heads for more than 20 years.This picture shows master Siow alongside his masterpiece.
The lion is made by attaching thin strips of rattan to form the basic shape.The structure is then supported by a 'U' shaped metal rim
After the basic structure is done,a layer of gauze is added on the strucrure followed by another layer of bamboo paper.
Once the paperwork is done,a layer of paint is added and designs are made according to the customers request
The lion is then brought to life by adding fur,attaching the body and ears.The picture is an example of a completed head on wan seng hang's website
